MANHUNT Book Discussion will start on FEBRUARY 10. Manhunt, the 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer is a New York Times best seller. A three-session discussion will be held Tuesdays, Feb. 10-24, 12:15-1:00 PM in the Mansbach Library, College Drive Campus. The discussion is open to ACTC students, faculty, staff and adult area residents. Preregistration through the Library is required, and books are available. The program is supported by a grant from the Kentucky Humanities Council, Inc. through funds from the Kentucky Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission (kylincoln.org). Mock Election!

In the spirit of democracy the ACTC Library will hold a Mock Presidential Election on October 28 & 29! Students can come and show their Student ID at the front desk and receive an “official” ballot. Students are only permitted to vote once and the winner will be announced Thursday October 30th.

So get out and let your voice be heard! Practice voting for the big day November 4th and participate in the 2008 ACTC Mock Presidential Election!

A big "thank you" to all the students who made our Voter Registration Drive a success. We registered 47 students in Boyd and Greenup Counties and handed out another 40 cards to students in Elliott, Lawrence, and Carter Counties.

Pimp My Paper

As March gives way to April and the final weeks of class we know it's the time of year to really get to work on research papers. The Library has access to several excellent online databases for all your research needs. In addition to our physical book collection we have a virtually limitless collection of ebooks through NetLibrary:

We've also recently added the Oxford Reference Online to our collection of databases. The Oxford database provides access to thousands of articles from the world's most trusted sources. Articles are from Encyclopedias, Dictionaries and other Oxford publications. One of the really great features is that the articles are already cited for you to simply copy and paste onto your Works Cited page!

Frederick Douglass

As we continue Black History Month we recognize one of the true heroes of our country and a champion for equality- Frederick Douglass. Douglass's story is a remarkable one. A slave who taught himself to read and write, Douglass's first radical step towards freedom was to teach other slave children how to read and study the New Testament. After escaping his enslavement in the south, Douglass made it North where he was free to get an education and work on making all African-Americans free through his writings, politics, and teachings.

In his life Douglass became a true civil rights champion and the first major black abolitionist in the country. He was a staunch ally and friend to President Lincoln- so much so when Lincoln was killed his wife gave Douglass Lincoln's famous walking stick and it still survives today at his homeplace in Washington DC.

Make the Best of Your Semester

College is very time consuming. Here are some hints to make your semester go smoothly.

Keep a calendar to let you know due dates for assignments, tests or library books
Arrive a little early to get a parking space
Save your documents frequently; email yourself the document just to be sure you have a copy
Use a jump drive to save documents, but be sure to keep it somewhere safe
Keep your course syllabus handy for each class all semester
Ask questions if you need help
Keep an eye on your books and bags; never leave items unattended
Pay attention and take good notes; if you miss class, be sure to get the notes from a reliable person
Be courteous and respectful of classmates and instructors

Welcome back students, faculty, and staff! The Mansbach Memorial Library has resumed it's normal hours. We have two major happenings this month; a new faculty art display will go up sometime in the next week on the right hand side of the entranceway and we will release our new graphic novel collection this week.

To celebrate our new graphic novel collection a local comic collector, Steve Sierer, has donated some of his more popular titles to display on the left hand side of the entranceway in the display cases. The display is not meant to showcase rare and valuable titles, but highlight some the more popular heroes who have been woven into the fabric of popular culture.

The success of our new graphic novel collection depends on you! Please be sure and check them out when they go into circulation this week and if you have any titles you would like to see added be sure and suggest them at the desk. The more graphic novels we circulate the more we will be order!

Today @ 2PM we will be hosting a reading of "Moving Mountains" by author Penny Loeb. "Moving Mountains" is the account of one woman, her community and the fight waged and won against big coal and mountaintop removal. Ms. Loeb is the former senior editor at U.S. News and World Report and former investigative reporter for Newsday. She was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

New Copier

Unfortunately the days of free copies have to come an end. We finally have the coin-op copier set up for you to use and is fully operational (like the second Death Star in Jedi). Copies are 10 cents per page. The coin-op takes $1's and $5's and also gives change, please do not ask the library for change because we CANNOT give out change for the copier. The new copier is located in the Copy Room directly across from the periodical section, first door on the left!

The Faculty of Mansbach Memorial Library, Ashland Community and Technical College, invite you to a reading of Moving Mountains by author Penny Loeb. Compellingly written, Moving Mountains is the account of one woman, her community and the fight waged and won against big coal and mountaintop removal. Ask X - An Ask.com search engine that allows you to preview web pages before going to them. Contains many of the same features that Ask.com users will love.

Searchmash - Touted as Google's playground, Searchmash offers many similar features of Google, but in a "bare bones" format. If you like Google but are tired of their sponsored links and general clutter you will like Searchmash.

Yahoo - Do you remember Yahoo? Once again Yahoo is topping the list as not only a contender with Google, but a victor over the "top dog". Yahooo search engines such as Alltheweb.com, Altavista.com, and of course, http://search.yahoo.com are providing users with better search results for their general searches.

Banned Books Book Club

We are still alive and kicking in the Banned Books Book Club. To start off the new year, we will each be reading a book from the New York Times Best Seller list (any date, list, or book is great!!). Come share your book at our January 25, 2007 meeting. We will meet in the ACTC library in the Walthall Reading Room from 5:30 - 6:30 pm. Spring Semester 2007 Book Discussions

ACTC Library will again be offering book discussions to a select number of technical program classes at the Roberts and Technology Drive campuses. The librarians can accommodate up to four discussions this semester. Culinary Arts has already requested a book discussion for 2007, its third year of participation.

The discussion program is simple --- 1) Instructors review an annotated list of library-suggested titles, which can be either non-fiction or fiction, as long as the book is available in paperback and relates in some way to the course of study; instructors select the book with assistance from the librarian; 2) ACTC Library purchases the books and delivers them to each instructor for distribution to his/her students; 3) Students have at least one month to read the book in or out of class, or whichever reading time period the instructor prefers; 4) Each book discussion group convenes, one time, for a discussion session in late February or during the month of March; the session includes a discussion facilitator, as well as an invited resource person, or "scholar" in the particular program field; 5) Each book discussion lasts from 75 to 90 minutes and participants may keep their books.

November is National Novel Writing Month

Have you always wanted to write the "great American novel"? Now's your chance! Participate in National Novel Writing Month, also know as NaNoWriMo. The goal is write 50,000 words (about 175 pages) in 30 days (Nov.1-30). Registration is free. Tax-deductible donations are encouraged, but not required.

According to NaNoWriMo, "This year, 75,000 adult participants are expected to take part in November's challenge, and we're anticipating 8,000 kids will write books with our Young Writers Program. We're once again donating 50% of the year's net proceeds from contributions and merchandise sales to build libraries for children in Southeast Asia. With your help, by this time next year, kids throughout Vietnam will have shelves and shelves of mouth-watering new books at their schools to read and enjoy."

Registration is now open and will remain open until the end of November.

Renew Your Library Books....Online

Don't let library fines make your wallet light. Renewing your ACTC Library books just got easier. Did you know you can renew your books online? Click on the "Catalog" link on the library's homepage. In the top, right-hand corner, there is an option called "Your Library Account". You may log into your library account by using the barcode on the back of your library/student id card, your Social Security Number, or your Institution ID (Student ID Number). Then enter your last name. It will bring up the items you have checked out, amount of fines owed and any items you have requested. Check the boxes of the items you would like to renew and click on "renew item".

Online Renewal Q&A:

Can I renew a book that I've already renewed?

No, unfortunately not. The renewal limit is once. The item may be available for renewal, but you will need to bring it into the library, as well as your student id/library card.

It won't let me renew my book. Why?

There are several reasons why you might not be able to renew a book online. Here are the most common reasons:

Renewal limit has been reached (you can only renew a book once online)
You owe fines/fees to the library
The book is already overdue (you will have to come to the library to renew at that point)
Your book is an interlibrary loan (Interlibrary loans can only be renewed through Shirley McKinley)
